Aperol Spritz Story
When the daytime adventures are transitioning to nighttime escapades, all of the restaurants and bars in Milan open their doors to a unique form of happy hour the Italians call "Aperitivo". For only an hour or two, as the Tuscan sun is setting, patrons who purchase a drink are invited to dine at a delectable Mediterranean buffet of charcuterie, pastas, and salads - usually complementary. Students studying in Milan, and savvy travelers, flock to these happy hours to save on their food budget and have more money leftover for drinks at the clubs.
The wine-based Aperol Spritz cocktail, the mainstay of Milan's Aperitivos, originated in Italy about 100 years ago in the village of Podova. The unique flavor punch comes from the, you guessed it, Aperol apéritif, which is made with bitter orange, gentian, rhubarb and cinchona - might not have guessed that part!
Imagine our excitement when we came across Armando Rosario in the Campari booth at the South Walton Beaches Wine and Food Festival! Not only is he an awesome bartender, he is also author of the handy guide, The Twelve Cocktails Book: The Twelve Cocktails Everyone Needs to Know. But until your book arrives, we've posted the recipe below.
